The Hungarian Government established the Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship program to promote the internationalization of Hungarian higher education and to attract top international students from all over the world who can establish personal and professional ties to Hungary while receiving a high-quality education in the heart of Europe.

Scholarship Details:

The scholarship is based on bilateral education agreements between Hungary and the sending nations’ governments. It is accessible in over 90 countries across five continents, drawing tens of thousands of foreign students each year. More than 1200 full-time degree programs are available to applicants, encompassing all higher education subjects at all degree levels, including part-time and doctorate programs.

Scholarship Requirements:

Applicants must satisfy the following conditions to be considered for the Stipendium Hungarian Scholarships:

  • Scholarship applications are open to all foreign applicants.
  • Citizens of Hungary or those with dual nationality in Hungary are not eligible to apply for a scholarship.
  • Students who will be above the age of 18 on August 31, 2024.
  • Applicants who are not studying at a higher education institution in Hungary on a self-financed basis.
  • Students who have previously received this scholarship are not eligible to apply for it again.
  • Scholarships are available for bachelor’s, master’s, one-tier master’s, and non-degree programs.
  • Tuition-free education entails not having to pay a tuition charge.

Stipend per month for non-degree, bachelor’s, master’s, and one-tier master’s students:

HUF 43,700 (about. EUR 110) each month contribution to living costs in Hungary for a period of 12 months till completion of studies

Accommodation contribution – a free dormitory place or a contribution of HUF 40,000/month to accommodation costs for the duration of the scholarship period (Please note that if the student does not live in the dormitory, the HUF 40,000/month is a contribution to rental costs, and in larger cities – particularly in the capital city – this contribution will not cover the full amount of rental costs.)

Medical insurance provides coverage for healthcare services.

Medical insurance – health care services provided in accordance with Hungarian legislation (Act LXXX of 1997, national health insurance card) and extra medical insurance for up to HUF 65,000 (about 170 EUR) per person each year.

Doctoral degrees

Tuition-free education entails not having to pay a tuition charge.

Monthly stipend – doctoral level: according to current Hungarian legislation, the monthly scholarship amount is HUF 140,000 (approximately EUR 365 for the first phase of education (4 semesters) and HUF 180,000 (approximately EUR 470 for the second phase of education (4 semesters) – for 12 months a year, until completion of studies.

Accommodation contribution – a free dormitory place or a monthly payment of HUF 40,000 to housing expenditures for the duration of the scholarship period (Please note that if the student does not reside in a dormitory. The HUF 40,000/month is a contribution to the rental expenses, and in larger cities, particularly the capital city, this payment does not cover the whole amount of rental charges.)
